Nature is the Source of All Inspiration

At long last, the UK is enjoying a few sunny spring days!

As the rainy tail of winter comes to a close, it’s time to get inspired. Whether you keep a garden outdoors or simply a few plants around the house, here are a few of the most fragrant flowers to add to your collection this spring.

For those of us who have a passion for floral fragrances and delight in the ambiance of luxury scented candles and reed diffusers, choosing our favourite flowers for the garden is the highlight of the year.

Jasmine

Perhaps one of the most classic additions to your garden is jasmine. Jasmine boasts a beautiful display of white star-shaped petals, and is one of the most aromatic flowers you can find in the UK. That’s because white flowers—such as jasmine, gardenia, tuberose and orange blossom—do not attract pollinators with their bright colours, but rather their heady, fragrant scents.

A classic and romantic flower, jasmine gives off its strongest fragrance at dusk. If you decide to cultivate jasmine indoors, be sure to find a window that enjoys direct sunlight for at least six hours a day. They also thrive with good air circulation, so be sure to open the windows and let in a bit of that fresh spring air as well.

Rose

It goes without saying that roses are the most popular fragrant flowers you can grow. There are thousands of variations of this romantic flower in almost every colour you can imagine. If it’s fragrance you’re after, you’ll want to search out old garden roses. These are the classic wild roses that existed before the Victorian era, with a round shape and dozens of petals. But if you love the modern bell shape, you’ll still enjoy a rich and classic scent.

The variety of potential fragrances you can enjoy from a rose cannot be overstated. Some hybrids will smell fruity or citrusy, while others—such as white roses—are musky and sensual.

Roses are a must-have addition for any garden. They’re hardy and easy for beginners to grow, and you’ll be enjoying a beautiful aroma for the whole of spring and summer.

Honeysuckle

A subtle flower, honeysuckle’s fragrance is perhaps its most distinguishing characteristic. A lovely array of yellow, pink and white, this delicate cluster of flowers is similar to jasmine’s heady fragrance, but a little sweeter, a touch of vanilla to soften its musk. If you favour more delicate scent, honeysuckle is a perfect addition to the garden.

Honeysuckle has the added benefit of being particularly hardy, and will blossom anew every year, even surviving through harsh winters.

Tuberose

Tuberose, despite its name, is not actually a rose! This white flower is far more similar to gardenias or jasmine. It grows best inside or in a greenhouse environment, ready to be transplanted into the garden when the sunny season is in full swing. But if you love musky, spicy floral scents, tuberose is perhaps one of the most rewarding flowers you can grow. It had lovely green basenotes that are certain to enrich your garden space.

Even taking a few stems inside will be certain to fill your home with fragrance. Perhaps one of the most distinctive scents in the world of gardening, its certainly not for the faint of heart! Tuberose is the flower for those who are truly passionate for floral fragrance.
