The anatomy of fragrance: Exploring layers of scent

charles farris vii candle

Nothing speaks to our senses quite like scent; each a blend of notes inviting us to explore and remember. With a heritage deeply intertwined in the art of scent, we invite you to explore its anatomy – the top, mid and base notes that unfurl with every breath to pull us into a warm embrace.

Alluring beginnings

We begin our journey with top notes. Also known as “head notes”, these are fleeting touches from your scent of choice, gently tugging at our curiosity as it introduces itself with subtle aromas.

Top notes break the ice, inviting us in and creating a first impression with ingredients known for their vigour – think zesty citrus or refreshing mint. They don’t last long, but they do whisper of what is to come; setting a stage for the fragrance ahead.

Unveiling the heart

As these notes recede, we are guided along by the core of the scent: the mid notes. Kindly referred to as “heart notes” by many, this is where things start to blossom into something fuller and richer.

Composed often of heavier florals, spices, or fruits, these heart notes command a presence that is robust yet comforting, holding our attention captive, suspending us between the past and the enticing thought of what is still yet to take place.

Think of the intoxicating sweetness of jasmine, or even the warm spiciness of pink pepper. This is how versatile the heart notes can be, how easy it is for them to explore sensory tales.

Slowly, methodically, they reveal their secrets to us.

A last minute resonance

Gradually, the scent finds its foundation – a grounding that gives weight and substance to this whole sensory serenade. These “base notes” are an echo of everything that has come before, and a gentle reminder of the journey so far.

This journey has been one of science and art coming together in the realm of perfumery, with each blend a footnote in our own story. From ephemeral top notes, through expressive hearts, and now with the lingering base of musk or rich woodiness, this symphony has now reached its crescendo.

A fond farewell

As our roving through the realms of fragrance comes to a close, it’s easy to become immersed in appreciation for the art and alchemy of scent. Through the serene light of luxury scented candles, or the whisper of a reed diffuser, the essence of scent permeates our space with kindness – surrounding us with a gentle flickering glow or subtle aroma.
